Our History
EJEA History & Timeline
Excellence and Justice in Education Academies (EJEA) has proudly served students and families in East County for over 20 years. Our roots are grounded in a powerful parent-led movement that began in 1991, when families in El Cajon came together to advocate for equitable access to high-quality bilingual education. Through organizing, community education, and leadership, these families worked to ensure that all children—especially those from historically underserved communities—had access to meaningful and rigorous learning opportunities.
In 2004, when Ballantyne Elementary School was scheduled to close, families and community members once again came together to advocate for their children’s educational needs. This moment became a catalyst for action. With a shared vision for a strong, culturally responsive bilingual program, families, educators, and community leaders worked collaboratively to establish a new school grounded in excellence, equity, and opportunity.
EJE Elementary Academy opened its doors in Fall 2005 as the first independent 90/10 Spanish-English dual language school in the region. As the community’s trust and enrollment grew, EJEA expanded to include a middle school, forming a unified TK–8 pathway that supports students from early learning through adolescence.
Today, EJEA continues to honor its founding vision as a school created by the community, for the community. Our recent reauthorization and unification into a single TK–8 school further strengthen our ability to provide a coherent, aligned educational experience for all students. Through our partnership with El Dorado Charter SELPA, we are also enhancing services to better support students with diverse learning needs.
EJEA remains deeply committed to developing bilingual, biliterate, and culturally grounded students who are prepared to succeed academically and lead with purpose. We continue to uplift the legacy of parent advocacy by fostering strong family partnerships and empowering our community as active participants in education.
As we look ahead, EJEA will continue expanding opportunities for our students while staying rooted in the values of excellence, justice, and community that have guided us since the beginning.
